About this Event

A rare opportunity to hear Ein Deutsches Requiem by Brahms in the two-piano arrangement which he made in 1866. Brahms had promised Clara Schumann that she should have the vocal score by Christmas of that year and, true to his word, he played through this version of the Requiem with her that very Christmas. What one loses in orchestral colour is more than compensated by the revelation of compositional detail in the score and the intricacy of the writing.

We welcome back pianist Roger Owens, who has performed with us many times before. He is joined by Catherine Milledge and together they will also perform Schubert's Fantasie in F minor, a wonderful work which Schubert composed in the last year of his life. Completing the Waynflete programme are two Psalms by Mendelssohn: Psalm 2 and Psalm 43 were composed between 1843 and 1844 at a time when the composer was frantically busy combining his activities of composing, performing and conducting.
